The compact disc used in CD-ROM drives has a data storage capacity of approximately 500 megabytes. Assuming that a page of text occupies 2 kilobytes of space (a conservative estimate), a CD can store close to a quarter-million pages of text, enough for over 700 average-sized novels. This large storage capacity makes them ideal for encyclopedias, libraries, and other large works.
